Cutting Cords & Cleansing Your Heart

Part of the "Opening to Love Course" at www.reikiblessings.com

Once I asked Swami Kriyananda, "How does one develop receptivity on the spiritual path?" His answer, I found, to be very helpful. He said, "Relax the heart and practice non-attachment." When we relax the tensions around the heart and let go of our desires and attachments, then we can be pure instruments for divine love. Or as Sri Yukteswar said, "the natural love of the heart" expresses itself and we live without fear and in true freedom.

We have a way, as humans, of becoming attached – attached to people, to things, to circumstances – you name it and it would seem we have the potential of becoming attached to it!

Especially when it comes to matters of the heart, we try to hold on to those people and situations which we associate with bringing us joy and happiness.

It is so easy to forget that love, happiness, and joy are right within us and we can (and should) experience these qualities at all times, no matter what the outer circumstance.

Attachments can manifest as little (or big) “strings” that go out from our hearts and connect to people, places, and things. It is so subtle at times that we probably won’t even notice it is happening.

Yogananda said to make it a practice to “die daily”, that is to say, to empty ourselves of all desires and attachments and make ourselves a perfect “temple” for the Divine Light to shine through us.

One amazing practice that I try to remember to do every day (and when I don’t, I do notice a difference) is to cut these cords that bind my heart.

Our minds are so powerful, a simple visualization can do the trick for cutting cords and making our heart chakras bright and beautiful. The visualization can be customized any way you’d like. There are no rules and these are only guidelines to help you make this practice your very own.

  • Sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight and body and mind relaxed.

  • Say a prayer to the Divine in whatever form you relate most to.

  • Invite any Masters, Saints, Angels, and spiritual guides you feel connected to.

  • Visualize your heart center as a golden globe of light.

  • Imagine that any negative emotions like fear, anxiety, depression, etc. as well as any attachments you may have are strings or cords that bind the heart.

  • Mentally sever all of these attachments (good, bad, indifferent no matter the label in your mind) and release them into the Divine Healing Light.

  • Feel that your heart is being bathed, purified, and uplifted in the love and joy of God's presence.

  • See your heart chakra being buffed clean until it is fully polished, sparkling, bright, and beautiful.

  • Relax, rest, and enjoy lifting the heart's energies up to the point between the eyebrows (the spiritual eye).

  • "Rest in God, live in God, in his joy, in his love."
  • Give thanks to the Divine.

Focus on Love

Do you ever find yourself focusing on negativity? - People you dislike, things you dislike doing, places you wish you never had to go? I think everyone does this at some point.
Think for a moment about all the people you love, all the things they do that you love about them, things that make you laugh, places that make you smile, everything that you truly love to do.
Focus on these things and bring them to your awareness as often as possible... because what we focus on most is what we attract to ourselves.

Reiki - A Way of Life

Reiki was founded, not only as a healing modality, but as a way of life - and as such, a way to balance of Body, Mind and Spirit. We should not only be satisfied with Reiki if it heals our physical ailments, as Reiki goes far beyond that. It is holistic to its core and therefore, one or two sessions may be effective in a physical sense but the results will be fleeting if the essence of Reiki is unknown. This essence is partly passed on to us through the Reiki principles but mostly through regular, dedicated channeling of Reiki. What better way can we serve our world then by bringing this Higher energy in as often as possible? And what better way can we serve as Reiki practitioners then by filling ourselves up with it each and every day? Since at the same time we are giving it out to everyone we come in contact with. We've all noticed how smiling is contagious... well the same is true with Reiki! One cannot help but spread the positive, loving energy when it is surrounding him/her and filling up his/her entire being!

Reiki Simplicity

One of the toughest parts of Reiki is remembering how simple it is! As human beings, we naturally complicate things. We often think too much and too many times we make everything as difficult as possible. I often find myself writing "one of the most beautiful things about Reiki is how simple it is".
We cannot hope to comprehend the power of the Universal Mind/God, so why should we comprehend exactly what happens during a Reiki session? Are we so intelligent, that we can direct the energy to do its absolute Greatest Good? I don't think so. The true lesson, I think, is learning to "let go and let God" so-to-speak. To let go of our pride and our fears and really channel the energy as Spirit intends us to. The more attached we are to the outcome, the more we get in the way and the less effective we are as channels.
So remember, next time someone tells you they didn't feel anything during a session or attunement, or the next time someone praises you for your wonderful healing ability - Someone can only heal if he/she allows his/her self to heal and you can only be a successful Reiki practitioner if you allow the energy to go where it is meant to go. Let it guide you - Body, Mind and Spirit! And let the Spirit of Reiki fill you up, each and every day.

Distance Reiki Attunements

Why do Distance Attunements Work?:

All attunements, whether received from a Reiki Master in-person or from a distance, work for the same reason.
  • They do not work because the Reiki Master was taught from a highly respected person.
  • They do not work because the Reiki Master has years of experience.
  • They do not work because the Reiki Master has payed $10,000 for his/her training.
Reiki Attunements work through the Reiki Master, but only because the student has already opened him/herself to his/her Higher Self.
She has said to herself, "I am ready to learn Reiki.", "I am ready to take control of my life.", "I want to help myself and my family and friends." "I am ready to relearn the gift that was given to me when I was born."

This is why Reiki Attunements work: Intention, Desire, Commitment, Awareness, Remembrance, and Most Importantly - Through Our Connection with Each Other and with God/Goddess/Spirit, etc.

If someone tells you that distance attunements don't work:
  • Ask him how many he has tried.
  • Ask him if he has had one himself.
  • Ask him why he believes they don't work.
  • Ask him if he believes in the unlimited power of the human mind and soul.
  • And finally, ask him if he believes that Reiki is limited by space or time.
I think you'll be surprised by his answers!

It is not my goal to put anyone's methods down. I believe that hands-on attunements work just as well as distance attunements and I would even recommend them to certain people who prefer to work with someone in-person. I do not claim to have some kind of special attunement procedure.

If you are looking for a Reiki Master in your area, we have an International Directory of Natural Healers. These are not just Reiki practitioners, but healers from many different modalities.

If you come across a Reiki Master who puts down anyone else's methods of teaching or attuning, ask yourself:
  • "Is this what Reiki is about?"
  • Why does this Reiki Master believe that she has all of the answers?
  • Do these answers sit well with you?
Reiki is about Love, Healing, & Compassion, not about Competition!
